I just Googled 'peri-urban' because I wasn't sure exactly what it meant, and found this site: http://www.periurban.com.au/

Here's a quote from it which explains - despite the typos!:

'So what is a peri-urban you ask? It’s someone who resides on the perimeters of urban areas, hence the term ‘peri’, and properties can range from around 5 to 100 acres in size.

With Peri-urban agriculture in the five mainland states produces about 25 per cent of Australia’s total gross value of agricultural production. (Geographical Research, June 2005)
Peri-urban agriculture is highly productive and valuable and ranges from hi-tech, controlled-environment agriculture (e.g. mushroom farming) through to community gardens and nurseries, specialist organic farms and hobby farms providing benefits including community cohesion, eco-tourism and health'
