Broad Bean Production Line
I love broad beans.
I grew them and tried them for the first time ever last year, and I simply love them!
They are incredibly easy to grow (they thrive in the worst soil), require no additional watering, and have a high yield of very satisfying, fat, juicy pods. All the recipes I have (only about 4 or 5) are simply wonderful too. I recommend growing broad beans - especially as a beginner (like me).
One down side to broad beans is that they take a bit of preparation before you cook them. About 1 kilogram of pods, yields about 1 cup of double peeled broad beans. This can be a drag when its just you in the kitchen.
However, if you turn the shelling and peeling into a family production line, it can be quite fun!
The girls shell the beans from the pod, and then I double peel them (remove the rubbery white skin that covers the bright green bean inside), all whilst watching afternoon tele. Note the stash of beans in Tabbys lap? They simply love to do the broad beans, and squabble over the last one every time.
